LambingThis is a very sensitive time of year for many landowners, and we need to be particularly conscious of where we fly and what we fly over. Some hills are out of bounds entirely and many others require us to ask the farmer before we fly. If in doubt please always check at the farmhouse before you head up the hill. It can be a long and difficult task to persuade a landowner to allow us to paraglide on his hill, and we know from experience how quickly and easily permission can be withdrawn. If you do speak to any landowners, at any time of year, please communicate their wishes to us and we will pass on the information to all. Please don’t be the one to lose a valuable flying site. It’s not simply a question of where you take off from, but also what you fly over, and where you land. Bear in mind as you merrily float cross-country that below you, bloated and nervous mothers are primed to drop warm, quivering packages of innocent new life. If they are to become hot, tasty packages of spicy lamb vindaloo we need to give their maaaa’s every encouragement; or at least give no cause for discouragement. Never fly low over any stock, and always land well away from all stock. Do Not Fly Gallow Law, Skirling Now – May 30 Whiteside, Romanno Bridge Now – May 30 Hamburger and ScroggyWe’ve paid last year’s fees for these hills… have you? The agreement with the farmer at Coates farm is that if you fly at these sites its £10 a weekday and £20 a weekend day for an unlimited number of pilots. There are NO other agreements with the farmer so if you fly there you MUST pay. Whenever the school is flying at Hamburger consider the fee for the day paid.

Spanish
Sun, Spanish Fun.There are only a couple of weeks left to book your Spanish Holiday and anyone interested should contact us Now. Following the success of last October we are using the same accommodation and the same price of £290 per week. We will be operating in Spain, from Saturday May 1 through to Saturday May 29. Just like last autumn we will split the time in Spain between two places. The first at the castle of El Pinet and the second at Dominic’s near the coast. There is no problem overlapping the two to sample both places.
Saturday May 1 to Wednesday 19 May, El Pinet (Pictured left): We were not disappointed by our choice in the mountains last October. The location of El Pinet castle is fantastic for easy access to the major flying sites. There is much untapped flying in this area, and we pioneered a site so close to home that the take-off is 15 minutes drive from falling out of bed in the morning, and a five minute glide home. Unlike last year’s mountain accommodation, the roads around El Pinet are straight and fast.
A half-hour drive takes you to a choice of eight sites, with another ten an extra 15 minutes away. A big choice of mountains, the potential of some we’ve only just begun exploring. The castle itself is a great place for a large unruly group, with lots of space to lounge about, and a huge log fire to sit around and talk bollix all night. There are some good eateries around for Spanish style grub with a choice of restaurants, bars and noisy smelly dancing places. Brendy the breakfast boy is back due to popular demand.
Thursday 20 May to Saturday 29 May, Dominic and Yvette’s: In their coastal “Casa Rural” are perfect hosts, with their unique blend of warm hospitality, fantastic food, and unquenchable party spirit. The swimming pool proves the perfect way to relax after a hard day’s flying, and is handy for Brendy to push new guests into after dinner! Dominic’s services even extend to serving up cold beer and G&T’s from his chilly bin on the landing zone at sunset. For pilots with less airtime, and a penchant for the poolside after breakfast.
The price includes accommodation, a big breakfast, airport pick ups, all transportation, free radio hire and our services as instructors, guides, translators and social secretaries. We will be using video to record the days events as a training aid and an edited video of your adventures will be available some long time after the holiday. Evening meals will cost between £4.50 and £8, including far too much wine. The area is particularly beautiful in the spring and the weather will provide excellent thermalling and cross-country potential. We welcome non-flying guests and we’re willing to discuss a reduced rate for friends and family who wish to join you in the sun.
Flights should be booked to Alicante airport. It’s a charter terminal and there are no shortage of flights from Scotland. They should cost from £120-£180. Ask us if you’re getting no good deals. For travel insurance contact Mike… details below. Please don’t hesitate to phone us for more information.
Insurance is one of those things that you put off, or think that you don’t need, until the day you need it and then it’s too late! A few occasions this year I’ve actually used my insurance and have been converted into thinking it’s really worthwhile. Travel insurance is essential in our sport: The cost of getting a helicopter ride off the hill is extortionate and if you’re injured and not covered the last thing you want to do is be digging around for you VISA card! Various companies cover Paragliding abroad and many don’t. Check that you are covered! Equipment insurance is a good idea too. We use Harrison Beaumont because kit is covered whilst in use too. If you wish to know more then we can recommend Mike Cobban as a broker who will sort you out with what you need:

SHPFIf you are not already a member, you would do well to consider joining the SHPF, the Scottish Hang gliding and Paragliding Federation. They are a Scottish Sports Council funded organisation, which can use its allocated budget to pay for competitions, courses and special events. As a member you get a newsletter, and free or subsidised entry to competitions and courses. You will normally save more than your annual membership fee by attending just one course or competition. Ulric has been involved with the SHPF for a while and now Drew McAdam and Billy McMurray are getting involved in the newsletter; the ‘flying Scot’. I’m sure they’d be happy to talk about what goes on. We would like to support the SHPF but leave this up to you. If you do, send us a cheque for £6, made payable to SHPF, and we’ll forward it to them
